Engagement sessions are not a marketing add-on, even though most photography studios sell them that way. They’re a working session — 90 minutes where the photographer learns how a couple moves together, how they react to a camera, what makes them laugh, and where their body language gets stiff. Couples leave knowing what to expect on the wedding day and trusting that the photographer is going to find the real version of them, not a performance. I include engagement sessions in some of my collections for that reason, and I offer them à la carte for couples whose collection doesn’t include one or who want a session without the wedding. Here’s what a Sarasota engagement session actually looks like.
The offering
90 minutes of coverage at one Sarasota location. Two outfit changes. 50 to 80 finished, high-resolution images delivered in an online gallery 10 to 14 days after the shoot. Full personal print rights. Included in some collections, available à la carte in others — quoted with your collection.
The 90 minutes is the working number. Less and you don’t get enough range; more and couples get tired and frames start to look forced. The two outfit changes are scheduled — typically one dressier (the look you’d want on a save-the-date) and one relaxed (jeans-and-a-good-shirt). One location keeps the session moving and avoids the dead time of driving between sites.
I shoot in Lightroom-tethered RAW, cull the same week, edit in batch over 7 to 10 days, and deliver via a private online gallery. Couples can download high-res files for personal printing, share the gallery with family, and order prints through the integrated lab if they want.
Best Sarasota engagement session locations
I scout locations the season before I shoot them. Here are the five I send couples to first.
The Ringling Museum courtyard and grounds. $20 photography permit through the museum (required). The Italian piazza with the David replica, the rose garden, and the bayfront all in one 30-minute walking radius. Best light: 4:30pm to sunset. The permit is worth it — no other Sarasota location offers this much architectural variety in one walking distance.
Downtown Sarasota — Burns Court, Main Street, Marina Jack pier. Free, no permits needed. Burns Court alley has the most character of any urban block in Sarasota — pastel cottages, mature live oaks, a 100-year-old streetscape. Marina Jack pier at sunset gives you a bayfront view with sailboats. Main Street’s painted murals and storefront awnings add color and edge. I’ll run a 3-stop session through all three in 90 minutes for couples who want urban variety.
Marina Jack and the Sarasota Bayfront. Free, no permits. The most accessible Sarasota waterfront for engagement sessions. Marina, sailboats, Bird Key bridge in the background, downtown skyline as a secondary backdrop. Best at 5:00pm onward — earlier and the marina is sun-hammered. Free street parking at Bayfront Park.
Bayfront Park. Free, no permits. The lawn between Marina Jack and the bridge with the open bay vista and the John Ringling Causeway. Best for couples who want a cleaner, less-built environment than downtown. The “unconditional surrender” statue (Hugo Pratt’s WWII kiss) is a recognizable backdrop for one or two frames.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. $50 photography permit + paid garden admission per person. The orchid conservatory, the banyan, the bayfront — three distinct backdrops in one ticket. Permits are required and limited; book 2 to 3 weeks in advance. Worth the cost for couples who want botanical-focused work. The conservatory is the most photographed indoor space in Sarasota for engagement work.
A few I rule out: Siesta and Lido at midday are crowded and the sun is brutal; better as sunset locations only. Bird Key Park is photographable but the parking is hostile. The Crosley Estate requires private booking, not engagement-session use.
How to dress
Two outfits, planned to work with the location.
For garden, botanical, or bayfront locations: muted tones, natural fabrics. Cream, sage, dusty blue, terracotta. Avoid bright whites (they overexpose against shadow), avoid black (it disappears in low light). A linen dress, a chambray shirt, leather shoes you can walk in. The other partner coordinates without matching — a sage shirt with khaki pants, a cream dress with a navy blazer.
For downtown or urban locations: more contrast and texture is fine. Denim works. A leather jacket reads well against painted brick. Just avoid loud logos and current-trend prints that will date the photos.
For the second outfit (the “relaxed” one): jeans and a good t-shirt or chambray shirt is more than fine. The relaxed set should look like how you actually dress, not a second version of formal.
Hair and makeup: professional if you’re considering it for the wedding day — engagement sessions are a smart trial run. Otherwise, what you’d do for a nice dinner. Avoid heavy contour and bronzer; both photograph differently than they look in the mirror.
What to bring: comfortable walking shoes for between-location moves, a touch-up kit (mascara, lipstick, blotting paper for the Florida humidity), and a water bottle each.
Callout — the dog question. Yes, you can bring your dog. Plan on the dog being in 10 to 15 minutes of the session, then handing off to a friend or family member. Dogs at engagement sessions photograph beautifully but they shouldn’t be the whole 90 minutes.
Best months to shoot
October through April. Sarasota engagement sessions in summer are punishing — humidity, 4:00pm thunderstorms, sweat through the second outfit by minute 30. I’ll shoot summer sessions but I’ll push for a 7:00pm start to dodge the heat and the storms. Winter sessions (December through March) are the best months — temperatures in the 70s, low humidity, golden-hour light that lasts.
January is the single best month for engagement sessions in Sarasota. Cool, clear, and the golden-hour window from 5:00pm to 6:00pm catches both the warm sun and the long shadow angles that read romantic.
May, June, July, and August are workable but you’re shooting around weather. September is hurricane-season tail and I avoid scheduling sessions then if I can.
What couples actually get
The deliverable list, specific:
- 50 to 80 high-resolution images. Color-corrected and lightly retouched. No over-edited skin or sky replacements.
- Online gallery, 60-day minimum. Couples can extend to 1 year on request.
- Print rights for personal use. Print anywhere — my lab, a consumer service, a frame shop. Same rights as wedding-day images.
- A small selection (10 to 15) processed in a black-and-white edit in addition to color, for couples who want the option.
- A 5-image teaser within 72 hours if the couple wants to share something fast (save-the-dates, social, family).
Optional add-ons: rush delivery (5-day turnaround instead of 14), additional outfit change (adds 20 minutes to the session), and a second location (adds 30 minutes including drive time). All quoted with your session.
The relationship-building reason
Engagement sessions aren’t really about the photos. They’re about the working relationship. A wedding day is the wrong day to figure out how a couple stands together, how they laugh, whether one of them goes stiff in front of a camera, what direction the photographer needs to give versus what the couple delivers without prompting. By the end of a 90-minute session, I know all of that. The wedding-day work is faster, easier, and more natural because we’ve already done this once.
For couples, the engagement session is the first time they see themselves in front of a professional camera. Most are nervous about it. Most leave the session relieved — the photographer wasn’t directing them every second, the camera didn’t make them seize up, and the images that came back look like them. That confidence carries straight into the wedding day. The first 20 minutes of a wedding day with a couple I’ve done an engagement session with are completely different from the first 20 minutes with a couple I’m meeting for the first time.
This is also when I find each couple’s “tells” — the body-language thing one of them does when they’re uncomfortable, the look they exchange when something is funny that no one else sees, the way they touch each other when no one’s watching. Those are the moments I’m hunting for on the wedding day. The engagement session is when I learn what to look for.

FAQ
Can we do the session at our wedding venue?
Yes, often. Most Sarasota venues allow engagement sessions on the property for couples already booked with them — sometimes for free, sometimes for a small access fee. Worth asking. Selby and the Ringling both allow this with the standard photography permit.
Can we bring our parents or family?
Better to keep family separate — a 30-minute family portrait session before or after the engagement session works well. Mixing the two crowds out both.
What if it rains?
We reschedule. Engagement sessions are flexible in a way wedding days aren’t. I won’t shoot a session in heavy rain — overcast or light drizzle is fine and actually photographs softly.
How far in advance should we book?
4 to 8 weeks out. Save-the-date timelines often drive the booking — couples who need images in hand 4 months before the wedding book earlier.
Do you travel for engagement sessions?
Inside Sarasota County, no travel fee. Manatee, Pinellas, Lee, and Charlotte counties — small travel fee. Statewide and destination engagement sessions available at travel cost.
Can we shoot in two locations?
Yes, as an add-on. Plan on 30 minutes for the move and re-setup. Three locations doesn’t work — the session loses momentum.
