Eloping can be a fun and inexpensive way to get married. There are so many creative ways to do it and often, it can give you more flexibility with how you elope due to the less time spent actually planning an entire wedding. There is no wrong way to elope, but this Boston City Hall elopement guide will help make your day a breeze and minimize the hassle.
Scheduling an Elopement at Boston City Hall
Step 1: Basic Boston Elopement Information
If you choose to have a Boston elopement, you’ll want to keep in mind that your marriage license is only valid for 60 days from the date that you apply for it. In addition, your license can only be used in Massachusetts. If you are looking to speak to someone at the Boston City Hall about your marriage license you can reach them by phone at (617) 635 4175.
Step 2: Marriage Intention Form at Boston City Hall
You and your partner will need to stop by the Boston City Hall for some paperwork.
You will need to complete a Marriage Intention form at City Hall and provide the following information: :
- Passport, Drivers License, Military ID or State ID
- Social Security Number
- Your current legal name and the name that you will use after you both elope
- Where you both currently live
- Birthday and the city you were born in
- Name of Parents (including maiden name)
- If you’ve ever been married before and how many times
- If you have been married, you will have to supply the divorce date
After you have filled out the forms for your Boston elopement packages, you will need to pay the City of Boston $50. The form of payment is cash, debit, money order, or credit card. Once the application for your Boston elopement application is complete you’ll bring it and the fee to the Registry Division. The Registry Division is located at 1 City Hall Square, Room 213 Boston, MA 02202-2006; open Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm
Parking tip for City Hall: The most convenient parking garage is the “Government Center Garage” located at 125 Bowker Street Boston MA.
Step 3: Pick a Season to Elope in Boston
When it comes to planning a Boston elopement, the first act you and your partner should accomplish is to pick a date and season for your elopement. Elopements are considered a relaxed and intimate event by many.
However, you still have some planning to do for your celebration. If you create a Boston elopement that is carefully thought out, you’ll have a wonderful event to look forward to. Whatever happens, the main detail to keep in mind is that your elopement is going to be all about you, your fiance, and the life-long commitment you’re about to make.
With that in mind, it’s essential to choose an elopement date and season that you and your significant other will unanimously agree upon. As you think about that detail, it helps to know the different seasons in Boston which to elope in. Each of these seasons comes with different advantages and disadvantages. It’ll be a big help to find out more about them so you can pick a good date for your big day.
Fall Elopements
If you have never experienced Fall in Boston, you’ll find it to be a pleasant surprise. During this time of the year, the temperature drops, and the city is filled with shades of yellow and orange. Elopement ceremonies are usually held during the daytime because it can get cold when the sun goes down. Nevertheless, those who love a vibrant feel and a chilly atmosphere will feel right at home with this season.
In my experience, the fall lighting is the best for elopements in Boston. There is a beautiful warm glow to the late afternoon light. Here is a perfect example of the Fall light the Boston area has to offer for a Fall elopement in Boston:
Winter Elopements
Some couples choose to set their elopements in Boston during the winter. It is a captivating time when snow covers the city and the holiday cheer is in the hearts of all. The same goes for your wedding because the season is going to give it a wondrous and joyous vibe.
Do keep in mind that holding a wedding ceremony or reception in this kind of weather is not advisable. The snow and ice can make it difficult to walk and in addition, the winds can bring challenges with hair and veils. If you enjoy what the winter month can offer, I would recommend hosting your elopement in a majestic ballroom like the Fairmont Copley Plaza, where you and your guests can safely stay warm.
Spring Elopements
A lot of couples are often charmed by the idea of having a Boston elopement during the springtime. There’s that incredible feeling people get from the trees blooming all around, especially Boston’s trademark cherry trees.
You’ll also have that distinctly warm New England weather, which makes your outdoor ceremony feel just right for you and your guests. It would also help to check the weather forecast too because there’ll always be a chance of rain during this time of the year.
If this is the case, the wisest course of action is to have a backup plan to counter any sign of potential rainfall on your elopement in Boston. A great outdoor elopement backup plan would be the archways at the Boston Harbor Hotel which can be found in the Finance District of Boston. This Boston elopement location is open to the public and allows for a beautiful water view during your elopement.
Summer Elopements
Having a Boston elopement during the summer promises tons of fun and excitement. There’s a lot of sunlight to go around and the weather is perfect for that outdoor Boston elopement you’ve been dreaming about. Since you don’t have to worry about rain or snow, you can even wear a dress that lets you move freely and more comfortably. Do remember that during this season, there is an increase in humidity in the air. It’s best for everyone to determine how much time you’ll spend outdoors so you won’t be affected by this circumstance.
Step 4: Who Will Attend Your Elopement in Boston?
Choosing the date of your elopement is just the first step towards the big day. After that, you’ll need to choose the people who you and your partner want to be there. As you think about that, here are some tips that will make the process easier. Ask yourself these questions:
In some elopements, it’s just the couple and the officiant. Would you and your fiance prefer that kind of wedding?
Will you and your fiance’s family be invited to your elopement in Boston?
Are your friends or those of your partner invited to this special event?
What is the projected total headcount of your guest list?
As stated earlier, the love between you and your significant other is the main attraction of a Boston elopement. As such, you need to plan it carefully down to the last detail so your wedding will be a grand reflection of that love we’re talking about. Whatever happens, don’t feel pressured to invite people you’re not close with to your big day. Remember, you and your fiance matter the most during this celebration, not the convenience or happiness of your guests.
Something to note: it is good to research how Boston is handling Covid-19. The city limits the number of people within a venue for any event or occasion. That, and social distancing must also be maintained at all times. These protocols are strictly enforced to prevent the transmission of this disease, and ultimately, keep you and your guests safe. In all of this, you need to ensure your Boston elopement follows the city’s Covid-19 rules and regulations.
Step 5: Contact a Boston Elopement Photographer
Elopement clients usually hire a photographer for about 2 hours and the booking process is simple and done online. It is important to take your time choosing your photographer and find one that is right for you and your day.
The booking process for me is simple and done online. There is a 50% down payment to hold the day and then the other half is due 7 days before the elopement.
Clients can expect to receive the following with my Boston elopement photography package:
- 2 Hours of Photography Coverage
- 150-300 Edited Photos
- Password Protected Online Gallery
Step 5: Book Vendors
If you want to have flowers and get your makeup done for your elopement, there are many great options in the Boston area. Here are a couple vendors that I recommend for a bouquet and makeup:
Florist: If you are looking for an amazing bouquet, 33 Munroe is my favorite florist in Boston. Brian Finocchio is very talented and can create something special for you. A recent wedding we worked together at was featured on BostonMagazine.com. Click here to see the article.
Makeup: I can’t say enough good things about Jennifer M. Viveriros. She is amazing at what she does and I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with her several times over the years.
Step 6: Wait for Marriage License
You’ll receive your notification three days after your application is dropped off from the registry. Once your marriage license is ready to be picked up, you are one step closer to your elopement in Boston.
If you can’t wait three days, you have the option to pay a one time fee of $195 to waive the waiting period. When you are at the registry they will assign a courtroom in your Boston elopement package.
Step 7: Pick Up You Marriage License For Your Elopement in Boston MA
Before your elopement you’ll need to pick up your marriage license. Don’t forget to bring this to your ceremony and give to the person who is performing the ceremony. They will need to fill out this document and you’ll also need to witness to sign your marriage license after your elopement ceremony.
The person you have chosen to marry you and your partner will bring the marriage license to the City Hall.
Step 8: Planning your Boston elopement location, photos, and dinner celebration
Boston Elopement Photo Questionnaire
A few weeks before your elopement, I’ll send you a short questionnaire about your Boston elopement. On the it will have the whens and where of the day. I’ll also have a couple questions about what family photos you would like to take, as well as any special photo locations that you would like to stop at along the way.
Be sure to make a list of your own beforehand to organize your ideas of what type of photos you are looking for. The more information you can give me, the better your photos will be.

Dinner Location

Due to Covid-19 it can be tough to find a place to host an outdoor dinner for your Boston elopement celebration. A few of my favorite elopement outdoor dinner locations are Mooo, The Beehive, and Mistral.
