20 Questions To Ask Your Boston Wedding Photographer

Choosing a photographer for your wedding can be stressful. If you are planning a Boston wedding, the first thing to do is shortlist a few local professional wedding photographers that have a good reputation, then move on selecting 2-3 that fits your budget, and go with your expectations.

Once you feel comfortable with those wedding photographers, it’s time to bring down your list to a single photographer and ask them a few questions. Since you will be spending your entire wedding day with that Boston wedding photographer, it’s important to establish a good rapport with him in the first place. The following are a few questions that will help you book the right photographer for your wedding day.

Question 1: What Style of Photography Do You Specialize in?

Not all Boston wedding photographers may specialize in all styles of photography. For example, if a portrait is more important to you, then you would like to hire a photographer who has a distinct reputation in this style. On the other hand, if you want to focus on candid wedding photos, then you might expect your photographer to be specialized in wedding photojournalism. So, asking your photographer their style of photography matters.

Question 2: Will You Retouch and Color Balance the Photos? Will You Send Raw Photos For Preview as Proof?

Some Boston wedding photographers may send you raw, untouched, unedited photos. Other pros simply use their own skills and experience to deliver you polished photos without showing you any proof. While you can ask for proof, it’s better to allow your wedding photographer to edit the photos with the style you hired them for.

Question 3: How Many Weddings Have You Shot?

Your wedding day will only come once and therefore, you need to make sure that the Boston wedding photographer you are hiring has enough experience. Ask if they shoot for a living or as a hobbyist. Be sure to check their portfolio to see the quality of work and if it aligns with your expectations for your wedding photos.

Question 4: Do You Shoot Both Digital and Film?

While digital is the standard for most Boston wedding photographers, some still shoot film. Whichever one you want, be sure your photographer has the relevant skills and experience to deliver this.

Question 5: Do You Usually Shoot in Both Color and Black and White? If You Do, What Balance of Each Do You Recommend?

These days, most wedding photographers do a mix of both color and black and white. By asking what balance of each do they recommend, you'll get a sense of their style and how your album might look.

Question 6: What is Included in Your Wedding Photography Package

This question is important to ask when comparing fees and benefits offered by different photographers. While some wedding photographers in Boston just provide digital files within a certain budget, others are willing to provide prints and albums. This can impact the cost significantly and save you a lot of money.

Question 7: How Many Hours of Coverage Do You Provide? What Do You Charge For Extra Hours?

If extra hours are going to cost you, plan your photographer’s hours accordingly. For example, if he is committing you five hours of coverage but charging a huge rate for overtime, you might want them to leave after the cake cutting instead of after the last dance. Alternatively, you may ask for another package that provides more coverage. For an additional hour you can expect to pay $375-$600 for most Boston wedding photographers.

Question 8: What is the upfront and total fee?

In addition to this, it’s also good to ask when it's due.

Question 9: Will You Be My Actual Photographer, or Will it Be One of Your Assistants?

Big wedding photography studios in the Boston area have several photographers that would shoot for them. In your interview, ask them if they will be the ones to photograph your wedding. Better to confirm this beforehand to avoid any misunderstanding.

Question 10: What if You Get Sick? Do You Have Backup Photographers Who Will Do the Shoot?

An emergency can arise anytime, but it’s important to be prepared for it beforehand. If you're going with a Boston wedding photography company, you can be assured that there will be a built-in backup as they employ a team of photographers. But if you're going with a solo photographer, ask if he may call another professional wedding photographer in the Boston area with a similar reputation in case of an emergency.

Question 11: Will There be a Second Shooter? Is There an Additional Fee?

Having multiple wedding photographers can give you different perspectives on major moments. For example, one can shoot the groom's face when he first looks at the bride and the other can picture the bride as she walks down the aisle.

Question 12: When Will the Photos be Delivered After the Wedding?

The standard for a Boston wedding photographer to deliver the photos from a wedding is 6-8 weeks. Asking this question beforehand will help you manage your expectations of when you’ll receive the photos.

Question 13: How will you coordinate with my videographer?

A photographer and a videographer need to coordinate for a smooth working. Wherever required, they also need to stay out of each other's way. It is easier to do if they already know each other and have a good rapport.

Question 14: How many weddings do you shoot in a day?

If your photographer is shooting two weddings in a day, you'll need to work out with him to make sure your wedding doesn’t clash with the second one.

Question 15: Have You Ever Shot at My Wedding Location Before?

This question should not sway your decision whether you should or should not book the photographer you are interviewing. It’s nice if they have experience, but not a must. A professional Boston wedding photographer should be able to walk into any environment and adapt to the location.

Question 16: Will You Let Us Choose Our Photos? Or Do You Prefer to Work Your Own Way?

While most Boston photographers allow you to select your shot list to make sure you get the specific pics you want, it’s better to go with his instincts as you’ve hired a pro who already knows what makes an amazing wedding album.

Question 17: What Type of Paper Do You Use For Print Albums?

The ideal answer should be durable, acid-free, archival-quality paper, which won’t fade for several years to come. These papers can even last for a hundred years.

Question 18: Can I Share My Photos Online or For Publication?

If you love sharing your beautiful moments on Facebook or Instagram, then you must ask this question. After all, you would not want to run into copyright issues.

Question 19: Do You Bring Your Own Lighting?

Some Boston wedding photographers shoot with natural light and others will bring lighting. It’s good to ask if any additional lighting is required based on the venue.

Question 20: Do I Get the Print Rights to Photos From My Boston Wedding?

This is an important question. If you do not have the print rights, you are paying for each photo. This is something that was done during the pre-digital era of wedding photography. Most, if not all, wedding photographers in Boston do give print rights to the photos, but double-check and ask during the interview process.
